Journalism

To me, photography and true journalism is about capturing life’s ordinary moments and revealing that they have always been extraordinary. When it comes to enthralling magazine covers and attention-grabbing layouts, I look to exciting subjects like a nostalgic sparkler in the summertime.

I am a writer at heart and have been heavily involved in Lower Dauphin High School’s Falcon Flash since my first semester freshman year. Click here to view the 114 articles that I have published on our website to date. Some of my articles have been published only in our magazines (which we produce quarterly). Among my favorite topics have been my grandparents’ love story, our Special Olympics (this piece earned me a job of writing for another local magazine later on), my missions trip to Honduras, and the adolescent experience.

For the entirety of my time involved in the Flash, I served as the staff photographer and cover designer. To view some of my covers, click here. I have also learned how to create attention-grabbing layouts, including the layout for my article about avoiding toxicity, my photos for the fall play, and an article about winter activities.

As a senior, I have the honor of serving as editor-in-chief. I am in charge of reviewing articles written by others and managing the Falcon Flush (our monthly installments of bite-size news and entertainment for our high school bathrooms).

In addition to writing, I have a love for the technological side of things. In a recent video by our broadcast journalism group, I had the opportunity to advertise our journalism program. I am currently doing an internship at my church where I am learning and practicing podcast and video production. I often am in charge of the livestream of our Sunday sermons as well.

Outside of writing for the Flash, I’ve always had a passion for writing. I have written a novel and a poetry book, and I am enrolled in an independent study where I am working on another novel. (View my completed chapters here.) I enjoy writing songs, short stories, and various other methods to express my creativity. (A majority of my work is available here.) I am also a director for Dramapalooza, my high school’s series of one-act plays directed and performed by students. I wrote my play, A Conclusion for Beatrice. After high school, I aspire to be a creative writing professor.

I am very interested in photography and have done a lot of photography, both for Flash and on my own. Here are a few of my favorite photos from the past year.

I am eternally grateful to the journalism program for the friends, experiences, and self-improvement to which it has led. I appreciate being nominated for this award and am very thankful to my teacher, (Mrs. Lena Russell), my parents, and all of my supporters who have encouraged me in my writing endeavors.
